Welcome to my bushwalking page
In New Zealand it's called tramping. In North America it's called hiking. In the Himalayas it's called trekking, in the UK hill walking, in Europe it might be called a randonee. Here in Australia we call it bushwalking. It's about packing what you need for a day, two days, a week or even longer, and then heading out into the bush for a walk. The Blue Mountains near Sydney provides almost limitless bushwalking opportunities.
This part of my web site contains photos and writeups of bushwalks that I have done around Australia, primarily in the Blue Mountains and Tasmania. If you are interested in bushwalking overseas, in places such as New Zealand, the Himalayas and Europe, then visit my trekking page.
I regularly take interested people with me on bushwalking trips around Sydney and elsewhere. I do most of these trips with the Sydney University Bushwalkers, of which I have been a member since 1985. If you are interested in pursuing any of these activities, you can either join SUBW or if you like you could always contact me directly using the email link above.
I tend to enjoy incorporating an element of exploration to most of my bushwalks, and thus many of my walks are not confined to established trails or tracks. It is often interesting to head off track and venture through the country on rarely travelled routes, following natural landscape features such as ridges and water courses. Travelling in this way allows you to visit areas not otherwise accessible. Doing so usually involves navigating with map and compass. If you are interested in learning to navigate through the bush with map and compass, you can come along on one of my trips or take a look at my navigation page.
The Blue Mountains near Sydney includes a large area of wilderness stretching from near Mittagong in the south right up to the Hunter Valley in the north. This is all fantastic bushwalking country and is featured in many of the photos and trip reports that you will find on this website.
